Our mother earth is getting polluted day by day and we humans are solely responsible for this. Realising this, a 85 year old lady has created a forest on her own. We all know that it is impossible to create a forest within a day or a year. And yes it took nearly six eras for her to create this forest. Devagi amma belongs to Kolakai which is in Muthukulam. Muthukulam is a city located in Alappuzha, Kerala. Devagi amma has a great love for nature and she says that her mother in law is solely responsible for her love towards nature. Devagi amma was happily married and she did farming with her mother in law for a large number of years.
Once she met with an accident and hence she was able to do farming and her mother in law was becoming old and she couldn’t continue as well. And hence farming was completely stopped. She says that in her regions men go to work in corporate companies and women practice farming. Devagi amma was sad and depressed as she couldn’t give up her love for nature. Nearly after three years she decided to plant a sapling in her 5 acre ground, gradually that become two. Devagi amma’s husband respected her wish to plant more trees and hence he started getting her seeds of different varieties of plants daily.
They planted fruit trees, herbs, medicinal plants and so on. The couple has even left two open grounds so that during rainy season water would get accumulated and it would be helpful for birds and animals coming to their forest. Till his death Devagi amma’s husband brought her seeds on regular basis. Now nearly 1000 trees are there in their forest. All of these trees are grown through organic means without using chemicals. Appreciating her great work government of India has given her two national awards. The first one was “Indira Priyadarshini Virushamithra” and the second one was “Naari Sakthi Puraskhar”. Apart from this she have received a number of state awards also. At least from now, let us all plant a sapling during our special occasions considering Devagi amma as an inspiration.
