Radaan and Radhika redefined television with Chithi. Nobody could recreate the impact that Radhika made with Chitti. We still remember Kaninmani title song by Nithyashree. Don’t we. A simple story of a stepmother evolved to become one of the timeless classics with regard to television. The impact was such that we had serials with similar names and plots which tried to built on Chitti’s success. But Chiti was a game changer in the real sense. It made Radhika a household name and made her the Ekta Kapoor of Tamil television. Till date the success of Chithi has paved the way for so many imitations on the small screen.
The serial starts off in Baasha mode with no one knowing the identity of Radhika. Slowly the truth comes to light even as Yuvarani falls in love with Sivakumar but Sivakumar marries Radhika. From that point it becomes a revenge tale as Yuvarani marries Sivakumar’s friend. It had 467 episodes and ran from 20th December 1999 to 2nd November 2001 for a period of three years. Since then it has had so many reruns in many channels. It was directed by C.J Baskar and holds the credit for being the most watched show in a regional channel till date.
