Unfortunately, a selfie became a reason for the tragedy in this family. On Sunday, a newlywed couple- Perumalsamy, 24 and his wife Nivedha, 20 along with Perumalsamy’s sister Yuvarani (20) visited their relative Ilangovan at his house which is located in Tamil Nadu’s Krishnagiri district. Soon after the visit, the trio and Illangovan’s three children- Kanniga (19) Sneha (18) and Santosh (14) visited a reservoir at Marampatti village.
When the family was trying to take a selfie near the water body, Santosh, a class 9 student lost his balance and tried to hold his sisters for a grip. But, unfortunately, ended up in pulling them along with him into the waters. Due to this unexpected incident, Kanniga, Sneha, Santosh, and Nivedha drowned and died. However, Perumalsamy saved his sister Yuvarani. The bodies were brought to the waterfront and were taken to the autopsy.
According to one news report, the northern Tamil Nadu district has witnessed 19 deaths due to drowning in the recent past. After the tragedy on Sunday, Krishnagiri district collector S Prabhakar warned citizens not to take selfies in water bodies.“When a few college students go near water bodies to indulge in selfie-taking, they unexpectedly end up falling in it. Therefore, be advised not to take selfies in water bodies. The young and old in Krishnagiri district should cooperate to avoid deaths,” he said.
