Avadi is one of the developing cities located in the west of Chennai. The city is known for its immense number of leading industries. It is to be noted that the population in the area is reportedly encountering a rapid growth. Owing to this crisis, TN government has taken a massive step. Due to the necessity to fulfill basic requirements and to improve the standards of livelihood in Avadi, the government has decided to upgrade the Avadi municipality to Corporation. On June 17, 2019, the government has released ordnance regarding the decision. As of today, Avadi is marked to be the 15th municipal corporation in Tamil Nadu.
“To improve the level of civic services provided and to enhance the annual income, the decision of converting municipal to corporation has been made”, said the law department secretory S S Poovilangam in his explanatory statement. The current employees of Avadi municipality will continue to work until the employment of special officers. As per the ordnance, the corporation will comprise of a mayor, a standing committee, a wards committee, a council and a commissioner.
“The upgrade of Avadi municipality to corporation is one of the electoral promises made during Assembly elections 2016”, said Mr. K Pandiarajan, the minister for Tamil official language and culture. He added that there are all right reasons for the current act of conversion. He further declared that the areas adjacent to Avadi may encounter development in future.
