Former finance minister P Chidambaram has been finally arrested on Wednesday by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The arrest was done after many efforts that included CBI officers to scale walls to enter Chidambaram’s home. Since Tuesday, the authorities were attempting to arrest Chidambaram. At last, they were able to arrest him on Wednesday night. Chidambaram was arrested for the INX Media case. He has been accused of misusing his power and position as India’s finance minister to benefit INX Media. For over two years, the court had granted protection from arrest to P Chidambaram. This situation changed on August 20, i.e on Tuesday, the high court refused to extend it any further. Following this, the investigation agencies arrested him.
After the arrest, P Chidambaram has undergone medical examinations by a team of doctors. He spent his last night at CBI lock up. However, during the whole time, he didn’t speak much. He neither spoke to CBI officers nor the doctors. Currently, he is being guarded by two CBI officers and is under CCTV surveillance.
What had happened earlier?
In 2007, Indrani Mukerjea and her husband co-found INX Media. The Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) allows INX Media to receive a foreign investment of Rs. 4.62 crore. However, the media received Rs.305.36 crores, violating FIPB rules when Chidambaram was the Finance Minister. In 2008, the Finacial Intelligence Unit finds the abnormality in money flow at INX Media. Back in 2010, a case has been registered under Foreign Exchange Management Act violation. In the year 2017, An FIR was charged with respect to the allegations. And, the case was in trial. However, P Chidambaram managed to get interim protection from arrest. In the midst of all this, the co-founder of INX media Indrani Mukerjea was arrested by Mumbai Police in connection with the alleged murder of her daughter.
Two months ago, the Central Vigilance Commission sought sanction to prosecute bureaucrats (Sindhushree Khullar and Anup K Pujari) of former Finance Minister Chidambaram for their alleged involvement in INX Media case. Following this, Indrani who was jailed turned as an approver in the case. A month later, Delhi High Court rejected bail applications of P Chidamabaram and the next day CBI arrested him.
