People of Tenkasi were requesting for a long time to split Tenkasi from Tirunelveli and declare it as a separate district. Earlier, the Informations were out that the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edapadi Palanisamy would declare Tenkasi as a separate district in Tamil Nadu Legislative assembly to satisfy the rising demands. Thus in Tamil Nadu, Tenkasi would be the 34th district after the official statement. At this instant, the Chief Minister Edapadi Palanisamy, under the rule 110 declared Tenkasi and Chengalpet as separate districts in the Legislative Assembly. In continuation of this, Tenkasi has been split from Tirunelveli and Chenagalpet from Kanchipuram districts.
The new Tenkasi district comprises of the Sivagiri, Ambasamudram, Kadayanallur, and Shenkottai regional wards. The new Chengalpet district comprises of Maraimalainagar, Madurantakam, Pallavaram, Tambaram, Pammal and Chrompet cities. Guduvancheri, Peerkankaranai, Perungalathur, Madambakkam, Sembakkam, Thirunirmalai, Medavakkam, Thiruporur, Tirukazhukundram, Mahabalipuram, Idaikazhinadu, Karunguzhi, Acharapakkam panchayats are also included. Thus now the number of districts in Tamil Nadu has been increased from 33 to 35.
