In Tanjore district, the police officials arrested farmers who were engaged in a strike against the upcoming hydrocarbon project. In the month of June, ONGC proposed to dig 104 hydrocarbon wells in Tamil Nadu including the delta region. About 176 hectares of land covering both barren and cultivatable lands were to be taken on lease for the cause. The firm awaited for the approval from Tamil Nadu government.
At this instant, the farmers of Tanjore district went on hunger-strike voicing against the extraction of methane. They demanded to leave the hydrocarbon plan in front of the district collector’s office. But, the police have arrested the farmers. As an act of condemning the police behaviour towards the farmers and to put a full stop to hydrocarbon extraction, a group of students from Marudhapandiayan college united to protest, blocking the way at Tanjore-Tiruchi National Highways. They shouted against the central government’s regime and emphasized to quit hydrocarbon project.
