It has been more than 26 years since Tamil cinema has returned empty-handed from the National Film Awards. The last time it happened was in the year 1992. Since then Tamil cinema has been a constant presence in the National Awards every year and we have even dominated the awards every year. But 2018 was a colossal disappointment. Even Keerthy Suresh won the award for the Telugu film Mahanati though it was also released in Tamil. The fact that the jury overlooked Malayalam star Mammootty’s towering performance from Tamil film Peranbu has received a lot of flak on social media. Ayushmann Khurrana for Andhadhun and Vicky Kaushal for Uri: The Surgical Strike have shared the Best Actor award. This has led to severe outrage among fans.
Even director Vasantha Balan has questioned Tamil cinema’s no show at the National Awards despite towering performances by child actress Sadhana and Mammootty. The reason is said to be the lack of proper representation on behalf of Tamil cinema at the National awards this year. The chairman of the National Awards jury received hate mails from Mammootty fans but the actor promptly apologized for this behavior of his fans. Despite films like Vada Chennai, Pariyerum Perumal and Peranbu we could win anything this year.
