S.P Janananathan is a grossly underrated director in Tamil. Despite being a part of a number of good we are yet to recgonize him for his amazing filmography so far. How many of you know that it was his birthday yesterday. You don’t right. Let’s look back at his journey so far. His first film Iyarkai was a unique love triangle. It was about love that is lost and found at the very end. The climax is unexpected and just like Shaam’s character in the film we are stunned too. It was a moving portrayal of love , loss and hope.
E was another critically acclaimed movie with Jeeva in the lead. It was about how we fall prey to the perils of capitalism. The concept of Bio ware was beautifully explored in the film. It also made us realize how we were all falling prey to a capitalist in one way or the other. His best film till date is of course Peranmai. Apart from the notes of women empowerment throughout the film the climax is a compelling lesson on class divide. We feel gutted as someone else walks away with all the honours and the applause while our hero goes back to his normal routine.
His Puramboku Ennum Podhuvudamai was a fitting ode to communism. Almost all his films gift some important take aways for the audience. There are some filmmakers who continue to make films for the love of the craft. S.P Janathanan is one of them. He has even written for Boologam starring jeyam ravi which spoke strongly about capitalism and received a good response from audience. Now his Laabam with Vijay Sethupathi in the lead is in progress. Let’s wish this wonderful film maker more awards , accolades and box office success in his future projects. He deserves so much more.
