Anand Mahindra has expressed his astonishment at sharing the news of Kamalathal, an elderly woman who sells idli in Coimbatore for Rs 1. At the village of Vadivellampalayam, this 80 years old lady sells hot idlis at a surprisingly low price. Along with the Idli, she offers chutney and Sambar. Despite, the increase in the cost of whole spices and ingredients, she sells the idli at the same price (Re.1). Even at her old age, she grinds the idli flour using the old quern stone and prepares the spicy chutney with the help of grinding stone. Adding to this, she cooks only using firewood till now. This, old method of cooking added to the taste of the food.
“I would start my day at 5.30 in the morning. I used to make Chutney and Sambar first. I lit the stove by morning 6 am and I will bake Idlis till 12″, she said. When asked about how she could sell idlis at Re.1, she says that ” It costs around Rs.300 for the rice grains, Groundnut oil, and Lentils. I gain Rs.200 per day. I would sell the Idli at the same price and won’t increase the rate. People from everywhere buy Idlis here. Some pay for the food and some won’t pay. However, I never ask people for money because all I want is to see the poor people satisfied with the food they have from me“, says Kamalathal.
When interviewed Ramasamy, a regular customer of Kamalathal’s idli shop, he said ” Even today, the Idli is available at Re.1. And, if you have Rs.10, you could eat stomach-full. At times, if I pay the next day, she wouldn’t question. Even if I have Rs.500, I would eat at Kamalathal’s shop, because of the taste. As she uses old methods to grind the flour, the taste is at its maximum“. And, this news went viral on social media. When it reached ears of many, customers marched towards Kamalthal’s shop. And eventually, her shop became famous along with the news that has been spread.
A private news agency has released a video of Kamalthal and her Idlis. Anand Mahindra, Chairman of Mahindra Group, who shared this news on his Twitter page, expressed his glee that Kamalathal is selling Idli for a rupee. Commenting on this, he stated ” One of those humbling stories that make you wonder if everything you do is even a fraction as impactful as the work of people like Kamalathal. I notice she still uses a wood-burning stove. If anyone knows her I’d be happy to ‘invest’ in her business and buy her an LPG fueled stove.”
