An India-based Neutrino Observatory (INO) is to be set in Theni district, Tamil Nadu. The central atomic energy department has granted permission for the construction. Ambarappar mountain region is at Pottipuram, Theni. In the year 2010, the central government announced that a neutrino research centre would be constructed and put into execution in this region. The estimated amount for the project was calculated to be as 1500 crores. Meanwhile, for the commencement of neutrino observatory, constant oppositions raised by the Tamil Nadu politicians, people in and around the region and environmental researchers. They worried about the environmental well being and thus were against the proposed plan.
However, as mentioned earlier, the central atomic energy department granted permission for building a neutrino observatory in Theni district. As per the order, the neutrino observatory is to be established for the first time in India. Further, the central government assured that no sort of environmental damage would take place. At this instant, the Ambarapar mountain is to be dug a cavern up to 2 km for the observatory setup.
