Nalan Kumarasamy is one creator who has changed the face of Tamil Cinema with his films. You ask any movie buff and he will instantly name Soodhu Kavum as one of the best films of the decade. It showcased a different Vijay Sethupathi who wasn’t afraid to play his age. Soodhu Kavum was dark humour at it’s best. Vijay Sethupathi is a natural performer and Nalan knew how to exploit it to the fullest. The film moved away from all the clichés we usually associate with Tamil Cinema. The film didn’t even need a real heroine for Vijay Sethupathi and kidnapping was never this funny before.
Cut to Kadhalum Kadanthu Pogum and we have a soft romantic movies without romance. It isn’t even about a rowdy. It is about a man trying to redeem himself and woman who sets out on a journey to find out what she wants. Vijay Sethupathi is fabulous as the good for nothing guy and Madonna Sebastin gives him good company. The chemistry between the two leads is just adorable. And the final scene of the movie is sheer poetry as the frames freeze. No word is spoken yet so much is conveyed. The power of silence.
Nalan has shown so much promise both as a writer and a director. As someone who has slowly shifted the attention of Tamil Cinema he has shown so much promise. Let’s see what’s next for this promising filmmaker.
