96 which released last year became a blockbuster hit. The movie brought a nostalgia feel for so many of us. Vijay Sethupathi and Trisha played the leads in the film. The film had some wonderful music including songs by the Ilayaraja – S Janaki combination. The film chronicled the life of two lovers from their school days to their adulthood. The highlight of the film is unlike other love films the lovers purely live on memories and it gave a different feel to the audience. One of the important connecting points in the film is the Yamunai Aatrilae song from Thalapathy movie.
In a recent interview Ilayaraja was asked about the usage of his songs in 96. For that Ilayaraja had said that instead of using his songs the makers of a film can create fresh songs even if the time period in the film belongs to the 90’s. This he felt is the right thing to do. He also cited the example of an Hindi film which used new songs even though the film belongs to the earlier period. This interview has sparked much controversy on the internet. All of us have our own perceptions but tamil cinema will always be indebted to Ilayaraja.
