1)Indira Gandhi: The daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru,Indira Gandhi is the only woman Prime minister India has ever had.Indira Gandhi was extremely popular among the masses and was known for her unprecedented centralisation of power and bold policies.Two notable movements in her tenure would be her decision to go to war with Pakistan resulting in Bangladesh and her infamous emergency rule of India from 1975 to 1977.She was conferred with India’s highest civilian award,the Bharath Ratna for her contributions to India.She was assassinated by own bodyguards in October 1984.
2) Jayalalithaa: Jayalalithaa was a leading film actress of 1960’s who held the office of Chief minister of Tamilnadu for five terms.A reluctant actress,she forayed into the world of films on the insistence of her mother to support her family.She acted into over 140 films across Tamil,Telegu and Kannada before her entry into politics.A MGR loyalist,she proclaimed herself the heir of his party AIADMK upon his death and was elected to power in 1991, becoming the youngest Chief minister of Tamilnadu.During her five terms she witnessed several ups and downs and was acquitted in the infamous disproportionate assets case.However she had a strong hold over Tamilians and her ‘Amma’ branded goods made her extremely popular.She died on December 5,2016 following a 75 day hospitalisation.
3)Mamata Banerjee: The current and the first ever woman Chief minister of West Bengal,Mamata Banerjee is the founder of All India Trinamool Congress, which was founded by her after her split from Indian National Congress. She is also the first female Minister of Coal, and Minister of State for Human Resource Development, Youth Affairs, Sports, Women and Child Development in the cabinet of the Indian government . Fondly referred to as ‘Didi’ and famous for her eccentric nature,under her tenure West Bengal has recorded the highest growth and has significantly raced past all its peers.
