Director Mahendran is no more. The ace director who made a comeback as an actor with Illayathalapathy Vijay’s Theri breathed his last today morning. Mahendran is known for totally changing the way Tamil Cinema functioned with his Visual story telling. Until he came along Tamil Cinema was mostly confined to dramas and conversations. But he changed it all by having outdoor shoots with special emphasis on nature. Uthiri Pookal , Mullum Malarum and Johnny. He is credited for giving Rajinikanth his career best role in Mullum Malarum. Mullum Malarum was in fact Mahendran’s first film as director. The final rites will be performed at 5 PM on Tuesday.
The film Naam Moovar by director Jambulingam starring Jaishankar, Ravichandran and Nagesh was based on Mahendran’s story and this was his very first attempt in cinema. His other notable stories include the female-centric Panakkara Pillai starring Jayalalithaa in the lead and Sivaji’s acclaimed Thanga Pathakkam. He also made his mark as an actor in films like Theri and Petta. He was also part of the rew cently released Boomerang. Mahendran’s loss can never be compensated. Along with KB and Balu Mahendra Mahendran changed Tamil Cinema and made it what it is today. He’s had a wonderful career in cinema and now it’s time to say goodbye.
He was born in 1939. He was 79 when he breathed his last. He was ill and was receiving treatment in Apollo Hospital but was taken home on Monday night. His son John Mahendran confirmed this news on twitter. He was a silent rebel. I wonder what would have happened to Tamil Cinema without Mahendran. It would been confined to the four walls of a room with a hero who had the compulsion to look fair. His creations had no rush. Sometimes I wonder if he knew that his creations would elevate Tamil cinema forever. Sasanam in 2006 was his last film as director.
