Vijay’s “Sarkar” Is No.1 Hashtag On Twitter India For 2018

Twitter has slowly taken over movie promotions in India. Promotions are done with repeated tweets and hashtags. Sun pictures are known as the king of marketing and they have smartly proved it again with Sarkar. Despite the mixed word of mouth and the government controversy the footfalls for Sarkar hasn’t diminished one bit. In fact, the film is still going steady at the theatres. Now Sarkar is the top hashtag on Twitter. The movie has been trending on Twitter since the day of release and shows no signs of slowing down. Even a small twitter hashtag is proof of Vijay’s box office pull and staying power.

Not surprisingly the second trending hashtag is Viswasam. It’s Thalapathy – Thala force in twitter too, The most awaited Viswasam, Petta clash is also happening so chances are Viswasam will be trending until the film’s release. This is a clash which might set the box office on fire. 7 of the top 10 Indian hashtags in India were actually about movies especially South Indian movies. Bharat Ane Nenu, Aravindhasametha and Rangasthalam were the other trending hashtags namely Mahesh Babu, Junior NTR and Ram Charan. This more or less confirms the domination of South Indian Cinema on Twitter.
Other movies that made it to the top 10 hashtags were Rajnikanth’s #Kaala which coincided with the first-ever Rajinikanth emoji on Twitter. Interestingly, #Sarkar also topped the list of the most “influential moments” on Twitter in 2018, followed by the #MeToo movement.

While top hashtags are calculated by the number of times a single word is used as a hashtag, influential moments takes into account conversation around a topic which can include multiple hashtags. Other topics in the influential moments list include #KarnatakaElections, #KeralaFloods, #Aadhaar, #JusticeforAsifa, #DeepVeer, #IPL2018, #WhistlePodu and #AsianGames2018. This shows that it has been complete Sarkar dominance on Twitter.
