Water crisis is one of the major and important problems of Metropolitan cities like Chennai. Chennai is facing severe drought for past three years in a row and still it continues. Initially we lacked drinking water alone but now we don’t have water to do our household chores also. People living in apartments, restaurants, hotels, IT companies are all having a tough time this summer. They hardly get water to meet their needs. All these people and companies depend on Lorry water and now lorry water is also becoming a very huge demand. People tend to go for bore water and the bitter truth is that even after going deep the bore well contractors are facing difficulties to get water. Residents have opted to sink double the depth.
People belonging to Sub-urban areas like Chromepet, Pallavaram, Ambattur and Avadi are also facing severe water crisis. When they don’t get pipe water and tank water they opt for bore water and even after sinking up to 600 feet there is no water. And with this high temperature water needs are increasing at a rapid rate and Chennai residents are having a tough time. People are ready to pay money to get water. But, water is not available anywhere. All the dams, rivers and lakes have become completely dry due to irregular rains. Most of the people’s livelihood depend on these dams and rivers. A person have to stand in a long queue leaving all his or her works to get one bucket of water which costs 20 rupees. A family needs at least 5 buckets of water to satisfy their daily needs.
Luckily we have water in Veranam lake alone. If this situation continues then there will be a shutdown of large number of hotels and IT companies due to water crisis. This is the first time in 70 years Chennai is facing such water crisis and the only hope for Chennai to satisfy its water needs is South monsoon rains. If we don’t get rains then bathing itself will become a very big problem for Chennai people.
