Sadly not everyone can use the #metoo to shout their miseries out. Of course, how can a woman who works for daily wage afford a smartphone to let others know her plight? Yesterday, Rajam who is daily wage labour cried for help and tried to kill herself as the officials didn’t take any action on her complaint.
“I was given no salary for the past 3 months; I ain’t got food. I was undergoing physical abuse by the contractors”, cries Rajam to the police officer.
Under daily wage agreement, Rajam, one of the workers in public cleaning has suffered from serious issues. She has been serving as a social worker for the past 7 years. She was in charge of the public cleaning works at a public toilet near Kaliyakkavilai bus stand, Kanyakumari. The contractors for the toilet cleaning are Chandran and Ramdas. They told Rajam that she would receive Rs.25 per day for her work. But, no salary was given to her for the past 3 months.
The contractors just procrastinated whenever she asks for her salary. She was facing a rough time in hunger and poverty. Also, she said that the contractors tortured her sexually very often. Even after she registered her complaint at Kaliyakkavilai Panchayat, no action was taken. At this instant, a heartbroken Rajam welled up with tears in her eyes pleaded for the justice in front of the panchayat office. Under depression, She said that she would burn herself and turn into ashes.
Worried Panchayat workers informed this to the Kaliyakkavilai police station. As per the complaint, the police speeded to the spot and took Rajam’s complaint. Currently, the investigation is being carried out on the contractors.
