Vivek Oberoi who was once Hindi Cinema’s poster boy has now become a pan Indian artist. He was seen in Thala Ajith’s Vivegam as the “ Smart Move” nanba villain. He looked smart and dashing in that role as Ajith’s friend turned foe. He made a smashing debut with Ram Gopal Varma’s Company. He even starred in the Hindi version of Alaipayuthey along with Rani Mukerjee and the film was a hit as well. But a small spat with Salman Khan ensured his career went downhill after a promising start. He starred in a few films but none of them set the box office on fire.
That’s when Vivegam happened. Though the film was average it gave him instant recognition as he was acting opposite Thala Ajith. Playing a villain opposite Ajith is always special as it brings back lost actors back into the limelight. That is the mass of Thala Ajith. Thala Ajith gave Arun Vijay a new lease of life when Arun Vijay played his villain in Yennai Arindhal . Arun Vijay looked smart and handsome as the ruthless victor. The same thing happened for Vivek Oberoi as the film made him a sought after South Indian villain.
Now the big news is that Vivek Oberoi is all set to play Narendra Modi. It will be interesting to see how he plays the PM. Will he be a human being with all the usual strengths and weaknesses or will he play a larger than life political figure ? Let’s wait and watch. It is the season of political biopics with Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Anupam Kher playing Bal Thakrey and Manmohan Singh. The next on this big list is Narendra Modi. Hopefully it shows both the strengths and flaws of the PM in equal measure. If the movie does reflect real life it will be an interesting learning for all of us.
