Kanchana was the film which changed the horror genre in Tamil Cinema forever. It was the film which showed us that horror- comedy will always work. It started with Muni. Vedhika was Lawrence’s pair in the film. Raj Kiran played an important role as the man possessed by ghost. Lawrence as the timid man and Kovai Sarala as the humourous mother were an absolute riot on screen. It was a small film but it paved the way for the blockbuster sequels Kanchana and Kanchana 2. No one expected the Kanchana franchise to be such a big hit but it changed Tamil Cinema forever.
Kanchana was a blockbuster. Lakshmi Rai was the heroine. But the major highlight of the film was the comedy by Kovai Sarala and Devadarshini. The film’s humour along with the songs made sure that the film became one of the biggest blockbusters of all time in Tamil cinema and paved the way for so many imitations along similar lines. The Kanchana template was repeated in so many films. In fact the pei template was so popular that one pei film released every week. Kanchana was a mass superhit. It was only natural that a sequel followed to cash in on the success of the mass superhit.
Kanchana 3 has also released and is running successfully despite negative reviews. Now the Muni/ Kanchana franchise is going to Bollywood as well. The first part of Kanchana is all set to be remade with Akshay Kumar reprising Raghava Lawrence’s role. Raghava Lawrence himself will be directing the remake. Changes will be made to suit Bollywood sensibilities. Unlike the original Akshay Kumar will not be scared of ghosts and will not be possessed by 3 ghosts. There will be only one ghost which is a transgender. Kiara Advani will be playing the wife. The film will release on June 5 2020
