Nambiar was one actor who evoked fear in the minds of the common audience. He was the default MGR villain. He was someone who actually had the courage to oppose the hero of the masses. But he was exactly the opposite in real life – A sane peaceful swami. Besides villain roles he also did so many character roles which were memorable. Let’s look at the top 5 character roles of Nambiar.
Poove Unakkaga : Here he plays the grandfather who is struck between affection and hate. Nambiar along with Nagesh are a fun combo in this film. When the film is high on hate at one point Nambiar and Nagesh make their sons realize that love is beyond all religion. He even wants to get Vijay married to his grand daughter for a happy conclusion but Vijay opts for a different choice.
Baba : What starts off as an ordinary role eventually gains prominence as he makes Baba realize his destiny. It is one of Nambiar’s personal favourite roles as it mirrored his real life personality. He is calm and peaceful throughout the film as a wonderful contrast to Rajini who does not even know what he is capable of.
Gentlemen : Shankar’s first film and Nambiar mirrors the role of Mahabharata’s Krishna to action king Arjun. He advises Arjun and sticks with Arjun as he becomes the lone crusader for education. Arjun wants change instantly and makes him see the bigger picture. The most important dialogue of the film is uttered by Nambiar as he says ” It is always better to be Chanakya than a Shatriyan”.
Winner : He has a very brief role in winner as Vadivelu takes care of most of the film. But wherever he gets a chance he stamps his authority in comedy by mocking Vadivelu. It is difficult to match Vadivelu when he is in the frame but Nambiar does that in the little time given to him.
Yejaman : Once again a Rajini film but this is a stark contrast to Baba as Nambiar is the playful granddad along with Manorama. They make an adorable pair on screen and are a wonderful example of growing old together.
