Mohanlal celebrates his birthday today. On this lovely occasion let’s look at his 5 best films
Iruvar : Perhaps the most difficult Mohanlal role to date. He had to play the former chief minister MG Ramachandran with his heavy Kerala accent. But you forget the fact that the man is a Malayalee once he comes on screen, He’s earnest, charming and exudes power and ambition in every frame. That he has to pit himself against Prakash Raj is the cherry on the cake as they compete and outdo each other in every frame. Mohanlal starts off as an unwilling participant but slowly the self-realization of what he means to the masses turns into a burning desire which ultimately leads to his unprecedented rise to the top. Mohanlal breathes life into the role with absolute conviction making it a modern-day political classic.
Drishyam : The first Malayalam film to speed to the 100 crore club and rightly so. It is a film which appealed to all audiences in all South Indian languages. But nobody could match upto what Mohanlal did in the original, Even Kamal Hassan comes only a close second. Despite the crisis surrounding his family Georgekutty never loses his composure. He’s shrewd, balanced and never gives it away even at the very end. The best part is the fact that Mohanlal plays the part without melodrama. There are no tears or regrets just a man giving it his all to protect his family.
Puli Murugan : This action blockbuster from Mohanlal thrives mostly on Mohanlal’s screen presence and the action sequences. The film raced to 100 crores and became one of the biggest hits in Mohanlal’s career.
Siraichalai : Mohanlal , Prabhu and Tabu combine to give us an all time classic as Mohanlal mesmerizes us by shcasing the perils of a prisoner. The songs and the premise always moves us.
Unnaipol Oruvan : This is there on the list for one reason. Two of India’s greatest actors combine to give us a brilliant cat and mouse game. A common man and a commissioner pitted against each other in an engaging conversational tussle. There’s very little action. Just thoughts, words and angst. Mohanlal balances it perfectly is cornered by two individuals on either side of the law. Lakshmi and Kamal Hassan. The heavy Malayalam accent works in his favour too
