It is difficult to imagine Tamil Cinema love stories without break up. Let’s look at some of the most moving break up movies in Tamil Cinema.
Poove Unakaga : Poove Unakaga was the film which catapulted Vijay to stardom. The comedy in the film was top notch and the film had veteran actors Nagesh and Nambiar in Pivotal roles along with singer Malaysia Vasudevan. Actor Charlie along with Vijay had some hilarious sequences in the film. Sangeetha was the heroine. The movie had some lovely songs by S. A Rajkumar What made the film so special is the fact that the Vijay as the one side loves takes all the efforts to reunite his girl with her lover. Though the ending was sad it was a moving one.
Vinnaithandi Varuvaya : From the moment Karthik sets his eyes on her his world revolves around Jessie. She is older to her but that doesn’t stop him as he falls head over heels in love with Jessie. She loves him too but is indecisive always. For STR it was the movie which redeemed his career while Trisha lived the role of Jessie. The songs by A. R Rahman were a major highlight as Gautham Vasudev Menon moved away from Harris for the first time. There’s even an imaginary scene where the two join together but the reality is that they are not together but the positive thing is that the break helps him become a director.
96 : 96 is a recent gem starring Vijay Sethupathi as Ram and Trisha as Jaanu. The movie was directed by Prem Kumar. The highlight of the film is the lack of physical intimacy. Even 96 has an imaginary scene where the love succeeds but unfortunately the high school sweethearts never get the happy ending that they deserve. The ending at the airport is just gut- wrenching. Govind Vasantha is the soul of the film. For Trisha Jaanu was her best after Jessie. Illayaraja’s music also plays a major role.
7G Rainbow Colony : This was a Selvaraghavan special. He paired up an unlikely Ravi Krishna and Sonia Agarwal. The good for nothing guy falls for the pretty girl but what makes the film stand out is the way guy lives on in her memory after their physical union. The film also touched the father son bonding in a unique way. Yuvan Shankar Raja created an evergreen music album. The girl helps the guy find himself and he lives on in her memory.
Kaadhal : This was a film which stunned us when we were teenagers. A film which spoke loudly about the caste and class barriers which prevail in our society. Up until the climax there is hope of a happy ending but the final twist stunned us. For Bharath it was the film of a lifetime even as Kadhal Sandhya made a memorable debut. Balaji Sakthivel showcased the horrors of discrimination through love in this film.
