Madurai Municipal Corporation’s Vaigai Drinking Water Supply Pipe collapsed, causing water to flow like a river on the roads. Already due to the water shortage, the drinking water has been supplied only four days once. At this instant, the water has been waster in lakhs of litres. This sight of drinking water flooding the roads stired frustration among the people of Madurai.
It is known that the entire drinking water requirement of the Madurai Corporation depends on the Vaigai Dam. And the Vaigai dam relies on the water source of the Periyar dam. Due to the failed southwest monsoons, the water level at the Periayru catchment areas is very less. For the drinking water needs of the Madurai Corporation, only 45 cubic feet of water from the Periyar Dam is opened to the Vaigai Dam. Thus, due to the inadequate supply of water, the water level at the Vaigai dam has dropped to 27.79 feet. Earlier, about 81 MLD water is supplied to the public, two days once. Since yesterday, the water is being supplied four days once. The groundwater level is also not at good levels. As there is a prevailing demand for water, people buy a pot of water which costs from Rs.8 to Rs.10.
All over the state, we are facing a tough time due to water scarcity. At this time, how careful everyone has to be to not to let a penny of water waste? This ignorance and improper maintenance are so annoying, now that the public has to suffer for the cause.
