On August 5, 2019, the Union Minister Amit Shah proposed the Jammu Kashmir recognition Bill 2019 in Parliamentary house. The Bill revokes Article 370 and hence canceling the special status given to Jammu-Kashmir. Subsequently, a curfew was issued in the state as a precautionary measure to avoid any war-like situation. After, this the central government faced the voices of support and criticisms.
Many political leaders condemned the move. Some slammed this as an anti-democratic event. However, in a recent book launch event where Union Home Minister Amit Shah was present, actor Rajnikanth lauded the central government’s move on the Kashmir issue. He said “Really my heartfelt congratulations for your Mission Kashmir operations, sir. The way you conducted it, hats off, especially the speech you delivered in Parliament, fantastic sir, fantastic.” He also referred to Modi-Shah duo as Krishna-Arjuna in Bhagavadgita.
Soon after this, actor Vijay Sethupathi has slammed federal government’s move to revoke article 370 without taking views of the Kashmiris into consideration. The actor was in Australia to participate in the Indian Film Festival last week. In a radio interview with SBS Tamil Australia, he said that it was against democracy and that caused him great pain. He said, “Periyar had said earlier itself that people themselves should decide on their problems and issues. Can I interfere in the affairs of your house? it is you who live there… I can be concerned about you, but cannot impose my decisions on you. Both of these are different.” He added that while people outside Kashmir can be concerned about them, they should not step in and offer suggestions to them.
