India’s No 4 spot has always been a cause for concern ever since Shikar Dhawan who was batting at the top of the order got injured. His early exit from the World Cup meant that K.L Rahul who was batting at No 4 had to open and Indian all – rounder Vijay Shankar had to be slotted at No 4. Though he picked up wickets with the ball he was rarely called onto bowl and his batting at No 4 didn’t give us the confidence that we needed but captain Kohli spoke out in support of Vijay Shankar and we expected Vijay Shankar to play.
But Kohli had a surprise at the toss yesterday when he said that Vijay Shankar had a toe niggle and pant would be playing. Everyone thought that toe niggle was just an excuse to play Pant. But now it seems like Vijay Shankar really had a toe niggle and it has only worsened. He was hit on the toe once again by a Bumrah delivery. This means that Vijay Shankar will no longer be a part of the World Cup squad and will return home. He is likely to be replaced by Karnataka opener Mayanak Agarwal.
