Vivegam fame Vivek Oberoi had shared a meme related to Aishwarya Rai. Vivek Oberoi had dug up Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai’s 2002 affair and compared it to the poll results. He brought up that Aishwarya had once been in a relationship with Salman Khan (calling it opinion poll), but later dated him (exit poll) and finally married Abhishek Bachchan (the end result). Though it was created by another meme creator Vivek Oberoi sharing it was in bad taste and received a lot of criticism from social media and bollywood celebrities. Sonam Kapoor slammed him saying that it was “disgusting and classless”.
Urmila Matondkar lashed out saying that he should remove the tweet, if not apologize to Aishwarya and her daughter Aaradhya. The actor has also been served a legal notice by the National Commission for Women. But Vivek Oberoi refused to apologize and said “Those who are in the meme have no objection while scores of politicians are trying to politicise the issue. They don’t work on issues but start their politics on such non-issues. There is a ‘Didi’ in West Bengal who puts people behind jail for a meme. Now, these people are demanding to put Vivek Oberoi behind bars. They were unable to stop my film and hence are now are trying to put me behind bars.”
But the outrage continued despite Vivek’s continuous denial which forced him to delete the tweet and apologize. He said “Sometimes what appears to be funny and harmless at first glance to one, may not be so to others. I have spent the last 10 years empowering more than 2000 underprivileged girls, I can’t even think of being disrespectful to any woman ever.” It must also be noted that a biopic where he plays Prime Minister Narendra Modi is all set to release later this week after election. At this time sharing an offensive meme was not a very smart move.
