Tamil cinema has seen quite a number of woman directors who have made great films. Let’s look at some of them.
Suhasini Maniratnam: Suhasini Maniratnam was a fabulous actress who made quite a mark as a director with Indira. The film was way ahead of it’s time and spoke about caste and class issues back in those days. Suhasini’s sister Anu Hassan played the heroine while Mani Ratnam favourite Aravind Swamy played the hero. The highlight of the film was the mesmerising music by A. R Rahaman. Special mention for Radha Ravi and Nasser who gave power packed performances.
Sudha Kongara : Sudha Kongara’s journey as a director is very inspiring. After the not so successful Drohi in 2010. She came back after six years. The film was a runaway success and gave Sudha a new lease of life. It also relaunched Madhavan’s career and gave us a new talent in Ritika Singh.
Priya V : Most of us might not know Priya V. But almost all of us remember Kanda Naal Kudhal. It was one of the most beautiful love triangles in Tamil Cinema with Laila and Prasanna. The movie was directed by Priya V. She also directed another light hearted comedy kanamoochi yenada with Sathyaraj and Prithviraj.
Aishwarya Dhanush : She directed two movies 3 and Vai Raja Vai. Of the two films 3 is important because it spoke about depression from a man’s point of view. Also the film had the international viral superhit Kolaveri Di and gave us young sensation Anirudh.
Kiruthiga Udayanidhi : Kiruthiga directed two films. One was Vanakkam Chennai which was a laugh riot and the other was the intense Kaali. Two diverse genres and two different films.
These women directors have made quite a mark as directors. Hopefully this will pave the way for more such women directors in the future.
